Review of Bach concert

GLORY AND INTRICACIES OF BACH CAPTURED
14 April 2008

The Bristol Phoenix Choir is more than 45 years old and generally presents four or more concerts annually at different Bristol venues.

Bach's Mass in B Minor: St Mary RedcliffeOn Saturday, Bach's mighty Mass drew a performance that successfully captured the glory of the work but also invoked the intricate moments skilfully.

The bulk of the singing is done by the choir and this excellent group performed with great feeling and power throughout, especially in the magnificent Gloria.

Particularly impressive was the solemnity of the Crucifix before the excitement of the powerful Sanctus.

The final chorus, Dona Novis Pace, had the right contrast of peace before its exultant conclusion.

The five soloists each contributed to the success of the concert. Rachel Skinner has a warm, vibrant soprano voice, which was particularly pleasing in Laudamus Te, while Stephen Taylor's main alto solo was perfectly sung, with excellent results in the higher register. Other soloists were Suzanna Purkin (soprano), Richard Rowntree (tenor) and Niall Hoskins (baritone).

The augmented Emerald Ensemble, under the leadership of Roger Huckle, were once again superb accompanists and the whole concert was directed with aplomb by Leslie Bunt.
