We are performing John Rutter's Requiem, Mark Lawrence’s The Singing Will Never be Done, Janáček's The Lord's Prayer (Otčenáš) and Stanford's For, lo, I raise up.
Rutter's Requiem is one of the best-loved and most widely performed choral works of the twentieth century. The seven sections form an arch-like meditation on the themes of life and death.
The Singing Will Never Be Done was commissioned by our choir at the time of the death of the last veteran of the First World War and we first performed it in 2006. It combines a short narrative on the well-known Christmas Truce, followed by a setting of Siegfried Sassoon’s well known poem, Everyone Sang.
Janáček’s setting of The Lord's Prayer is a masterpiece of raw emotion, intimacy, and striking dramatic contrasts. Paired with the sweeping, turbulent intensity of Stanford’s prophetic anthem For, lo, I raise up.
